Groupon, Yelp Sued Over Mobile Commerce Patent
MOCONEWS - Nov 8 - The patent in question is owned by a subsidiary of Hothand, a firm that gained attention in 2009 by offering advertisers a way to send messages to students on their mobile phones. The company received the patent in 2010 and has already used it to sue Foursquare. The new lawsuit says that Groupon’s apps for the iPhone and iPad violate the patent as do its Android, Windows and BlackBerry apps. The patent abstract describes it as: A subscription-based system for providing commerce information for one or more mobile devices for one or more merchants.

MASHABLE - Sep 2 - Bahasa Indonesian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Thai. The app will automatically switch to the phone’s default language setting. This is the second wave of Foursquare’s efforts at global language expansion.

MASHABLE - July 7 - Foursquare is now commemorating a new achievement — 500K merchant accounts. 2011 is proving to be a big year for the two year-old Foursquare; it recently raised another $50M in funding and announced a nationwide partnership with American Express.

TECH CRUNCH - June 26 - Foursquare is raising $50M, and all of it will go towards building out the company. The valuation had been rumored to be as high as $1 billion, but our sources say it settled out at $550M pre-money, $600M post.

Groupon Rumored to Be in Talks with Foursquare
READ WRITE WEB - May 23 - Groupon is not wasting any time in trying to corner the market on location-based deals. Less than a week after partnering with location service Loopt for its Groupon Now campaign, the daily deals giant is said to be in partnership talks with Foursquare to target deals at its check-in users. Foursquare will be another avenue for Groupon to break into the location-based deals market but also adds an important layer that Groupon does not have a specific stake in - social.

Foursquare Raising Money At $500 Million Valuation
MASHABLE - Apr 24 - Fast-growing location-based startup Foursquare may be looking to cash in on its cachet. It’s reported to be exploring a $20-$40M funding round at a $500M valuation. In June of last year, Foursquare closed a $20M round of financing at a $95M valuation. The one-year leap from a $100M company to $500M company seems like a stretch, especially considering the startup’s 8M members pale in comparison to the user numbers reported by industry heavyweights such as Twitter (200M), Groupon (50M) and Facebook (600M).
Foursquare Hit With Its First Patent Infringement Suit
TECH CRUNCH - Mar 11 - Foursquare Labs, the company behind the popular check-in service, has been slapped with its first patent infringement lawsuit by a company called Mobile Commerce Framework. On April 6, 2010, Mobile Commerce Framework (MCF) was issued US Patent No. 7,693,752 by the USPTO. In summary, this patent describes: a subscription-based system for providing commerce information for one or more mobile devices for one or more merchants. Some techniques employed feature a subscription-based method for presenting commercial resources to a mobile device. According to MCF, Foursquare infringes its patent by creating and distributing mobile apps that can be used by people to obtain information and offers from merchants by searching, based on their physical location and merchant type.
Foursquare Closing In On 7 Million Users
TECH CRUNCH - Feb 22 - Foursquare has just crossed 7M user IDs, which should mean that the location-based social network will be hitting 7M registered users in the coming week. User ID numbers don’t quite match up to the network’s actual number of user accounts, but in the past have been correlated as a sign that the network is fast approaching the milestone. At the end of January, Foursquare announced 6M users, and it took a month and a half to add another million users from 5M in early December.

Foursquare Seeks Additional Funding At $250M Valuation
BUSINESS INSIDER - Jan 24 – Location-based service, Foursquare, expects to raise another round of financing at a $250 million valuation. The company raised $20 million last summer at $120 million valuation. CEO Dennis Crowley discussed turning down $250 million plus acquisition offers from Facebook and Yahoo last summer at a recent European conference. TECH CRUNCH - Nov 2 - Since Foursquare launched, the game has had to deal with "cheating” — people like to check-in at places where they haven’t actually been. The more persistent cheaters have managed to attain the coveted ‘Mayor’ spot at venues that they rarely visit. Foursquare gave verified business owners the ability to oust a Mayor if they believe the Mayorship was not gained through legitimate check-ins.
