How did you start In The Rooms and what does it do for people?
We
started In The Rooms almost two years ago. My partner Kenny Pomerance
came into my office and said what would you think about an online
social network for people in the recovery community? I looked at him
and took a moment and said let’s do it. He said no, I’m serious about
this. Don’t be flippant. I said no, I mean it, I’m in, let’s do it and
that’s how it started.
It just rang a bell with me that a
social network is what the recovery community needed. Both of us have
been in Recovery for over 25 years. We have dedicated our lives to
making recovery a better place to be.
The term “In the
Rooms” is an insider term for people who go to 12 Step meetings. For
example, if you’re in public, you don’t want to go up to someone and
say, hey don’t I know you from an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting? Because
these are anonymous programs, you go up to them and say, “You look
familiar don’t I know you from In The Rooms?”
Can you tell us more about the tools that you have within the service that help people talk and help them with this cause?
In
The Rooms is a Global Recovery Community. We have a mantra which is the
word “hitch.” The word is an acronym for help, inform, touch, connect
and heal, this is our mission. There are 3 groups that we want to reach
on our site. People in Recovery like Ken and I, people Seeking Help and
Family, Friends and Allies supporting recovery.
Members
start by filling out a personal profile. In that profile they list
their interests, passions, hobbies, educational, recovery and personal
information and you can make this as anonymous as you choose, we call
this tagging. From the tagging members find other members who are not
only in Recovery but who also have the same interests, passions and
hobbies. We want people socializing with each other regardless of what
fellowship or addiction they have. Our goal is to transcend the
boundaries of all 12 Step Fellowships socially while maintaining the
integrity of each in Recovery.
We will have a Family Tree
feature that represents everyone in their sponsorship lineage, a life
line and genealogy of those, of who came before and who will arrive
after you in your recovery. We have a Speaker Tape Library with
thousands of tapes for all the different fellowships. We have a Daily
Meditations feature, where you can read or write your daily meditation
and post it to your Personal Profile. We have Chats, Affinity Groups
for everyone, men, women, gay/lesbian and transgender, new comers and
we also cater to professionals, tailoring groups for doctors, lawyers,
nurses, pilots, people that are more into the anonymity of the recovery
process because of their professions.
Do you find they connect in real life as well?
Oh
yes, I know they do. We recently had a member from Saudi Arabia come
over to Utah. She can’t go to meetings in Saudi Arabia because she’s a
woman. But she came here and 2 women from South Florida flew out there
to meet her, spent the weekend with her and took her to a meeting. She
is now wearing an In The Rooms T-shirt proudly.
We’ve had
unbelievable testimonials come to us from our site on how this has
helped people, in hospitals, in remote areas where they can’t get to a
meeting often however they can be online listening to a speaker tape,
in a group for support or socializing with other friends in our
recovery community. Its just been very gratifying so far.
Is this a free community?
Yes, it’s free to everybody.
Do you have any other companies or services that you’re partnered with?
We
are proud that we just formed a partnership with Faces and Voices of
Recovery, which is a grass roots organization dedicated to promote the
success stories and issues facing the Recovery and Mental Health
Communities. And we’re just in the process of partnering up with other
organizations that are in the Recovery field with our same goals, which
is to promote the success stories.
What new features are coming live in the next month?
We
have a new In The Rooms I-Phone application and In The Rooms (IM)
Instant Messaging being launched in the next month. Also a new chat
system is coming out this week.
