TECH CRUNCH - Feb 21 - Yandex, Russia’s search giant, today announced that it will carry Twitter data in all of its search results. Yandex describes this as a licensing deal. The terms of it were not disclosed but Microsoft reportedly paid Twitter $30M for a similar search agreement. The Yandex agreement is similar to the real-time Twitter search that used to be offered by Google, a partnership that ended last year around the time that Google was launching its own Google+ service.

Twitter Opens Self-Serve Ad Platform Widely To Small Businesses
MASHABLE - Feb 17 - After making the platform available to just a few advertisers in November, Twitter will expand its self-service ad product to all small businesses next month. Twitter is partnering with American Express for the initiative, which offers preferential treatment for American Express cardmembers. Such cardmembers will be invited first and AmEx will give $100 in free advertising to the first 10K businesses to sign up.
Twitter Under Fire Post Mobile Privacy Row
TELEGRAPH.CO.UK - Feb 16 - Twitter has acknowledged that it has copied the content of peoples’ entire address books from their mobile phones and stored the information on its servers, without many of its users realising. Twitter has promised to update its privacy settings to ensure it is more explicit about what personal data people are sharing when using Twitter on their smartphones. When people download the Twitter app on their mobiles, and click the ‘Find Friends’ option in bid to see who of their contacts are already using the service, they often do not realise that the service then has access to their entire address book. Facebook came under fire last year after making a change to its developer terms, which meant users may have had to share their phone number and address in order to access a third party application. However, it subsequently reneged on this modification after a backlash from privacy campaigners.
Twitter Won't Be Ready For IPO For "A Couple Of Years"
READ WRITE WEB - Feb 14 - Don't expect IPO of shares of Twitter anytime soon. The company has placed restrictions on employees who hold shares, forcing them to keep 80% of the shares they own. It helps keep Twitter under 500 shareholders. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo sent out an email explaining the policy and the main reason for it. "We don't want to be public until we have very predictable quarterly earnings growth," Costolo wrote in his August email. "We're not ready to be a public company for a couple years."
Twitter, LinkedIn Will See Slower Revenue Growth
READ WRITE WEB - Jan 31 - Twitter and LinkedIn will continue to see strong advertisemnet growth, with Twitter's revenue expected to nearly double between 2012 and 2014, according to a report by eMarketer Digital Intelligence. Twitter gets 90% of its revenue from U.S. advertisiers, while LinkedIn depends more on foreign adverisers, with just 68% of its 2012 ad revenue expected to come from U.S. advertisers. eMarketer is projecting 83% revenue growth for Twitter this year, down from 233% in 2011, and 46.1% revenue growth for LinkedIn, down from 95% in 2011.
Twitter To Censor Content In Specific Countries
MASHABLE – Jan 26 – In a blog post called “The Tweets Still Must Flow”, Twitter announced Thursday that it is giving itself the right to withhold content in certain countries while keeping that content available to the rest of the world. The change means that any content deemed inappropriate by a specific government can now be withheld locally, with notifications going out to the user that either the specific Tweet or account has been censored. Twitter recently announced that it will become available in Arabic, Farsi, Hebrew and Urdu, languages used in many countries where government censorship is common.
African Twitter Map Shows How Continent Connects Digitally
GUARDIAN.CO.UK – Jan 26 – Analysis of 11.5M Tweets from the last three months of 2011 were analyzed by Portland Communications’ Kenya office and found that Africa’s biggest economy, South Africa, generated more than 5M of those, compared to Kenya’s 2.48M and Nigeria’s 1.67M. A number of African nations were mapped through Tweets, including a number in less tech-connected countries like Angola, Ethiopia, Mali and Sudan. The research, called How Africa Tweets, shows the average age of users to be 20-29 with some 57% of Tweets coming from mobile devices. A poll of Tweeters shows that two in three users use it to monitor news, and one in four use it to search for job opportunities.
Twitter Acquires Malware Protection Company
MASHABLE - Jan 24 - Twitter company announced its acquisition of spam and malware protection service Dasient. Dasient will be integrated into Twitter’s “revenue engineering team because they have a deep understanding of advertising-platform security issues,” says Rachael Horwitz, a spokesperson for Twitter. The team will be very valuable as Twitter continues to expand its ad products.
Twitter Acquires News Aggregate Summify
MASHABLE – Jan 19 – Startup social aggregation service Summify announced Thursday that it has been acquired by Twitter, though it remains unclear how the social networking site will integrate Summify’s business strategy into its own. Launched by two Romanian entrepreneurs, Summify collects and delivers the top five news stories being shared by friends on your social networks and delivers them in a daily summary. Terms of the deal have remained confidential, but Summify has already stopped new account registrations and will remove some of its key features in the coming weeks as it prepares for the merger.
Twitter Really Hates Google’s New Google+ Integration
TECH CRUNCH - Jan 11 - This morning, Google began rolling out a major change to its core search engine that intertwines results from Google+ with the ‘normal’ algorithmically-generated results. There have been plenty of critiques of the news on how this isn’t actually integrating ‘Your World’, as Google calls it, but rather just its own social network. Alex Macgillivray from Twitter called it “A bad day for the Internet”. Today’s launch may incentivize publishers and users to pay more attention to Google+ when it comes to sharing breaking news — after all, it’s the only service that’s going to pop up in Google search results. Which would reduce Google’s reliance on Twitter. But Twitter does have a point: people trust Google to serve up the most timely, relevant information possible. And without Twitter’s data, it’s going to have a hard time doing that.
Facebook, Twitter Protecting Users From Spammers
CNN - Jan 5 - Spammers are targeting Facebook and Twitter. In November 2011, 70% of all email was spam. The good news is, that was down from 92% in August 2010. But here's the bad news. Spammers are moving to social networks. Spammers hit 4M Facebook users a day. But Facebook is fighting back. Each day the site blocks 200M malicious actions, such as links to malware. As for Twitter, 1.5% of all tweets in 2010 were spam content. Facebook has a team of 30 workers who spend hours combing the site for user-reported spam. It also has become stricter on user identity and has made it harder for hackers to create fake profiles. Twitter, on the other hand, has only two programmers fighting spam.

Who Owns Your Twitter Account?
CNET NEWS - Dec 26 - Who really owns your Twitter account? That's the question at the heart of a lawsuit that could redefine the right of employers to seize and make use of employees' social-media accounts. For four years, writer Noah Kravitz produced reviews and video blogs for the mobile-phone site phonedog.com. During the same period, he also posted on Twitter and gathered 17K followers. When Kravitz left PhoneDog he continued using the account--with PhoneDog's blessing. Eight months after Kravitz lef, PhoneDog sued him, claiming that Kravitz's Twitter followers represented a customer list, that Kravitz had failed to relinquish the Twitter account when asked, and that he had therefore misappropriated trade secrets and interfered with PhoneDog's business to the tune of $340,000--$2.50 per follower per month.

MEDIA BISTRO - Dec 14 - AddThis has released a new infographic that looks at the sharing trends. In 2011, Twitter was responsible for 13.5% of sharing, growing 576.9% YOY. Twitter also makes up 52% of all sharing in Japan. Facebook accounted for 52.1% of all sharing on the web over the past 12 months – that’s four times the size of Twitter.

Twitter Teams Up With Japanese SN Mixi
ASSOCIATED PRESS - Nov 30 - Twitter and Japan's biggest homegrown social network mixi joined forces to strengthen their ground against a rapidly expanding Facebook. Japanese was Twitter's first foreign language platform, and it opened its first overseas office in Tokyo earlier this year. For mixi, the announcement couldn't have come at a better time. Data released this week from Nielsen NetRatings Japan showed that mixi stood in third place behind Twitter and Facebook in terms of unique visitors in October.
Twitter Gains Popularity In Arab Nations
AFP - Nov 25 - Online Twitter messages in Arabic rocketed from 99K a day in October 2010 to over 2M last month. Arabic is now the eighth most popular language on Twitter. Tweets in Japanese -- the second most popular language on Twitter -- account for 14.2% of the daily total, down from 19% a year ago.
UK Facebook And Twitter Users Reject Big Brands' Marketing
GUARDIAN.CO.UK - Nov 10 - 61% of UK internet users do not want to engage with brands on social networks, according to the research firm TNS, compared with 57% across other developed countries and a low of 45% in Latin America. One-fifth of the 2,093 Britons in the survey agreed that social networks are a good place to buy products, compared with the global average of 40%.

Twitter Secures “Tweet” Trademark
MASHABLE - Oct 11 - Twitter has settled a lawsuit that will give the company control over the “tweet” trademark. Twitter doesn’t currently own the trademark to the term. Instead, Twittad controls the trademark. Twittad, a provider of sponsored advertising on Twitter, has trademark its tagline, “Let your ad meet tweets.” It also has trademarked various variations of the word “tweet.” As part of the settlement, Twittad will transfer the “tweet” trademark to Twitter, though Twittad will continue to use its current trademark.
Twitter: 1,600 Advertisers, 80% Retention
TECH CRUNCH - Oct 5 - According to Twitter CRO Adam Bain, the company now has 1,600 advertisers, up from just a few hundred last year. The Super 8 Twitter campaign helped sell 1 million sneak peek tickets and box office revenues exceeded projections by 50%. An new eMarketer report is forecasting lower revenues for Twitter this year, but significant growth over the next few years as Twitter's self-serve ad product enters operations. 2013 Twitter ad revenues are projected to reach nearly $400m.
